[ARCHIVED] Press Release from City Manager Stephen Jellie Re: Sales Tax Collection Beginning March 1, 2022

Ogdensburg city 1868

The City of Ogdensburg will begin collecting sales tax from businesses operating within the City limits on 1 March 2022.    The attached official notice from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance provides guidance to businesses on changes that must be made to sales tax reporting procedures to comply with this change. Please click here to read the official notice.

The amount of sales tax being charged in the City will not change from the current 8%.   What will change is how the 4% local sales tax collected in the City is distributed between the County and City – which will now be 2% to the County and 2% to the City.

Business Owners – It is imperative that you follow the instructions in the above letter carefully and consult the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance if you have questions or concerns about sales tax monies collected in the city limits.    The City of Ogdensburg and St. Lawrence County are not authorized to make changes or provide direction to businesses; you must consult the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to ensure you are paying sales tax to the appropriate entity.

Residents and Consumers – The funds generated from Sales Tax proceeds in the City of Ogdensburg represent the second highest and second most significant source of revenue to fund City Operations and Services.   The City encourages all residents and visitors to shop within the City of Ogdensburg as often as you can, and purchase as much as you can from local business.   In addition, sales tax from all goods purchased via the internet and delivered to a City of Ogdensburg address are purchases that sales tax proceeds are sent to the City regardless of the location the item was shipped from.

Since taking office in January 2020, Mayor Jeffrey M. Skelly has focused solely on the financial survival of the City, while working tirelessly to accelerate the revival of the City.   Making the change in sales tax collection is an important and critical component to those efforts.   Please do all you can to support the City of Ogdensburg and BUY LOCAL!
