From the desk of City Manager Sarah Purdy...
COVID-19 UPDATE
May 4, 2020
For most of today I have worked with loud construction noise right outside my office window. There have been a few times when I have had to tell callers to shout into the phone so that I can hear them, and I actually asked one person if I could call them back later.
But it’s all for a good cause, namely, the convenience of our citizens. A drop box is being installed so that anyone who needs to drop off envelopes to City Hall can do so without entering the building, which is currently closed to the public.
The box is designed to be secure so you can pay a bill without worrying that someone else will come along and pull your envelope out of the box. When it is done, you will put your envelope in the box, check off that errand from your list, and go on to the next item. Meanwhile, your envelope will drop into a box on the interior side of the building and will be processed the next day.
It’s the cutting through the thick outer wall of the building that is causing the noise. It just stopped for a few minutes so I will return a call and then come back to writing today’s Update.
Our Department of Public Works Department is handling the labor and installation, and they are doing a great job. The box will be operational at the end of tomorrow. When you think about it, the box should have already been here long before the pandemic. Sometimes it takes a crisis to teach us how to conduct our lives differently, so we have learned and the drop box is here to stay.
Be hopeful, stay safe, stay healthy and stay together yet six feet apart. “Take 5 for New York” by calling someone and chatting for five minutes.
