The Ogdensburg Police Department is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and serves a population of approximately 13,000, covering eight square miles. The Police Department handles an average of 10,500 calls per year. The department also averages 1,000 custodial arrests, 1,400 traffic tickets, and 2,000 parking summonses per year.
The department is comprised of 28 sworn officers, along with five full-time civilian personnel. Also under the auspices of the Police Department are the Dog Control Officer, Bingo Inspector, and nuisance animal control.
The department is headed by Chief of Police Andrew Kennedy, and is generally divided into patrol and investigative functions. The patrol unit consists of one lieutenant, four sergeants, 17 patrolmen, and four dispatchers. The investigative unit consists of one lieutenant, one detective sergeant, three detectives, one general investigative detective, one narcotics detective, and one juvenile aid detective.
In addition to routine patrol and investigations, the department has specialized units, which include bicycle patrol, boat patrol, arson investigation, accident investigation, D.A.R.E, and narcotics. The Juvenile Aid Detective and School Resource Officer are full-time positions serving the youth of the community.
