Press Release from City Manager Stephen Jellie re: Community Support Program Phase 3

Ogdensburg city 1868

CITY OF OGDENSBURG COMMUNITY SUPPORT PROGRAM – PHASE 3 (INDIVIDUAL HOUSEHOLD ASSISTANCE)

OGDENSBURG WILL REQUEST ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY PROVIDE MATCHING FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $260,000 FOR THIS PROGRAM

Due to the tremendous positive response to the City of Ogdensburg’s Community Support Program Phase 3 (Individual Household Assistance), it is necessary to establish a cutoff date for the first round of applications for the program funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).  The last day to submit applications for Phase 3 – Round 1 will be May 6, 2022.  The City currently has $260,000 allotted for this program.

Applications are available on the City website at www.ogdensburg.org or can be picked up at City Hall Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.   Completed applications and required documentation can be delivered to Deputy Clerk Brittanie Kelso, 330 Ford Street, Room #4, Ogdensburg, NY 13669 by mail, in person or delivered to the City Hall drop box just left of the handicap ramp on Caroline Street.

Review of all complete application packets received at the City Clerk’s office by 4:00 pm on Friday, May 6, 2022 will begin on May 9, 2022.  Applications will continue to be accepted after May 6, 2022, however those applications will be reviewed in a second round of assistance if funds become available from St. Lawrence County to continue the program .

In the meantime, City residents are encouraged and urged to contact St. Lawrence County District 1 Legislator James Reagan (315) 393-2154, Finance Committee Chairmen Kevin Acres (315) 322-4129, Board Chairman William Sheridan (315) 324-6093 or County Treasurer Renee Cole (315) 379-2234 and tell them that you would like the County to consider providing a contribution of $260,000 to this program from the $20.9 MILLION in ARPA funds that St. Lawrence County received last summer and has yet to appropriate any of the funds for uses such as this.

Quote from Mayor Jeffrey M. Skelly – My administration has made the revival of the City of Ogdensburg its top priority and the most efficient path to reviving the City is for local government to support the people of the City that work so hard and could simply use a little boost after the two year battle with the economic impacts of the global pandemic.   Local government will not spend these funds more efficiently than residents, in fact, local government will likely waste these funds on expansion of government programs or prolonging the duplicative and inefficient services that exist.  I will soon request St. Lawrence County Legislature Chairman William Sheridan and St. Lawrence County Treasurer Renee Cole follow Ogdensburg’s proactive leadership and provide funding directly to small business, non-profits, fire and ems agencies and individuals that need it the most, to include an additional $260,000 to the City of Ogdensburg for the continuation of this program.

Earlier this week the Watertown Daily Times Editorial Staff stated the following in reference to Ogdensburg’s Community Support Program – “Ogdensburg’s program will assist neighborhoods in remaining viable during this period of economic uncertainty, and that will enrich the entire city in the long run”

Please call the City Clerk’s office at 315-393-3540 with any questions.
