COVID-19 UPDATE

April 23, 2020

The annual flip-flop between winter and spring is in full force now. There was snow on the ground yesterday morning when we woke up while today it is sunny and bright. I have a small garden in my back yard, and my perennials are bravely peeking out from the ground to see if it’s okay to grow taller.

The sunshine entices everyone to step outside and get away from being cooped up. That’s a great idea, so it’s back to basics in today’s Update in order to remind everyone what we all are supposed to be doing to help stop the spread.

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap. Wash for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice).
  • Cover your mouth with your sleeve or with tissue if you cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid shaking hands with others.
  • Stay home if you are sick.
  • Frequently clean and disinfect surfaces and fixtures that are touched, including your cell phone.
  • Practice “social distancing,” which means staying six feet away from other people. Observe the six-feet markings on the floors in stores.
  • Wear a face mask when you are in public or are indoors in a situation where you cannot be at least six feet apart.
  • No social gatherings of any type.

Let’s also help Mayor Jeffery M. Skelly have a successful food drive this Saturday. With masks on, stop by the front steps of City Hall between 1 and 4 p.m., where he and other volunteers will be accepting food donations to be given to worthy causes. We are all in this together.

Be hopeful, stay safe, stay healthy and stay together yet six feet apart. “Take 5 for New York” by calling someone and chatting for five minutes.
