COVID-19 UPDATE
April 2, 2020
Today’s “Update” focus is on three items.
First, let’s recognize the good work the Salvation Army is doing in Ogdensburg. Lt. Mark Devanney and Captain AnnMarie Devanney, along with several Salvation Army volunteers, are working with regional organizations to bring food to people in need here in Ogdensburg.
Anyone who needs food and/or some household supplies can contact the Salvation Army from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Thursdays at 315-393-3351 (find them on Facebook at The Salvation Army Ogdensburg NY). Boxes of food will be available for pick-up, and in specific circumstances the Salvation Army will deliver. The Salvation Army also runs a soup kitchen at its 701 Franklin Street headquarters on Tuesday evenings. And the Neighborhood Center is now located at the Salvation Army’s former seek and find shop at 727 State Street. The new telephone number is 315-229-8181, and the hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday (closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.). Call ahead to schedule a pick-up for a pre-packaged food order.
In addition, the Salvation Army offers online fellowship and spiritual services. The Salvation Army is a great resource, and financial donations also are welcome.
Second, municipalities throughout New York are launching the “Take Five for New York” campaign with the hashtag #Take5forNewYork. It’s easy to join! Just take five minutes every day to call a friend, family member or someone you know and talk for five minutes. If there is someone you haven’t talked to in a while, just call and say “Hey, I am thinking of you and wanted to say hi.” Social distancing is necessary during this pandemic; emotional distancing is not.
Third, out of an abundance of caution the City has decided to close off Kids Kingdom. Being outside when the weather is good is still a great thing to do, but the playground area places kids too close together, so for now we have to place it off-limits.
Look for spotlights about other community organizations here in Ogdensburg in upcoming “Updates.” And please be hopeful, stay safe, stay healthy and stay together yet six feet apart.
