Arbor Day Ceremony Planned

The Ogdensburg Tree Commission is planning an Arbor Day ceremony on Friday, April 26 at 9:30 p.m. at Groulx Park, also called Veterans’ Park, and the public is invited to attend.

The tree commission will meet at Groulx Park at 9:30 a.m. and following the reading of a proclamation, Pat Whalen will perform a tree-planting demonstration for the public. The commission will also tag an Ash tree to help the public with identification on their own property.

At 10:30 a.m., the tree commission will meet at the Dobisky Center, 100 Riverside Ave., where members of the St. Lawrence County Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Task Force and Environmental Management Council will present an EAB workshop to help educate the public regarding the invasive species that is making its way in St. Lawrence County. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Arbor Day will also be a time for the City to celebrate its 26th straight year as being designated a Tree City USA community. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. Ogdensburg joins more than 3,400 cities and towns that have been recognized as a Tree City USA community.

In order to be considered a Tree City USA, the city completed four requirements – establish a Tree Commission, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and observe Arbor Day.
